Mistakes, Oversights & Problems

One of the main purposes of the 9/11 Commission was to identify and correct mistakes that were occuring at all levels of the United States government and in private companies such as the airlines that allowed the hijackers to carry out thier attacks.

Think about what you have read and come up with a "Top 3 List" of the worst mistakes, oversights, and/or problems that made you think "that should have been fixed," or ""that should have never happened," or even "WHAT WERE WE THINKING?!?!?".

Post a single comment with your "Top 3" list in order from least important (3) to most important (1).

  1. I think the top 3 mistakes were:
    1. Not noticing the guns and knives they had.
    2. The government not notifying the airports of the previous hijackings.
3.Also allowing this to even occur, letting four casual guys take out thousands of people.

  2. 1. The metal detectors should have been working better so the hijackers would of got caught before aboarding the plane.
    2. There should of been security on the plane so maybe they could of did something to stop the hijacking.
    3. Warned the other planes quicker.

  4. "Top 3"

    1. A thing that makes me think "what were we thinking?" is we had the chance to catch bin ladin, but we didnt.

    2. One thing that makes me think that should have never happened is the whole accident. We have had problems before with them why didnt we work it out then or atleast be working on it.

    3. The thing I think we did the worst is why did the airport let the hijackers go through the alarms? They went off but they didnt do anything.

  5. 1. All of the agencies should of had a better line of communication and should have to share all information gathered with other agencies.

    2. All the airlines should have went on high alert when they found out about the hijackings and should have been notified ASAP.

    3. When the 3 hijackers on flight 77 set of the metal detectors they should have been stopped and searched.

  7. 1. Why couldnt they put togther that something was going on when they were all taking flying lessons at once and were together?

    2. If they were violent then why wouldnt they tell someone about it and possibly search them and the places they stay to make sure they are clean of bombs, explosives and weapons?

3.Why would the door to the captain on the airplane be unlocked or opened if they didnt/dont want anything like 9/11 to accure?

  11. -the lack of communication between government and the FBI,CIA and air lines i think better communication could have helped prevent this.
-the government made a good many agreements and really didn't follow threw
-Immigration should have been scaned more carefully.

  12. (3) The FAA and NORAD was unprepared for any type of attack close to level. Most of the country looked past some of the most important information about it.

    (2) After the first plane hit the world trade center there was not alot of people that got notified right away. the president/people traveling with him did not know nothing about the planes being hijacking. there was many problems with communtication. in the world trade center many floors could not hear anything.

    (1) the whole conflict started way early than 9/11. that was not the first bombing on the world trade cenetr, back in 1993 a truck bombed the parking lot under neath the WTC.

  14. 1. I think they should have double cheaked them because they were from another country (not trying to be rasist) its just to be safe.

    2. They should not have put Bin Laden on the bottom of our problems. we should have made them first priority.

3.The people in the building should have left even though they were told not to. their life is more important than their job.
