2/19/10 - Digital_Nation Question 1

According to the latest Kaiser Family Foundation data, 8 to18 year-olds are spending more than 50 hours a week with digital media. That's more than a full work week.

Is this too much?  Are kids today actually hurting themselves by using this much digital media?  Why or why not?

  1. no we are not. i love my cell phone, im on it atleast 15 hours a day. It's how i stay in touch with my family, friends, and my boyfriend. I think that people are over reacting about the media. Worry about yourself not what other poeple do and how they use the media.

  2. I say yes but yet no. Only because you can't blame the kids for the amount of time. Parents have control over there kids. If parents were more controling of there kids and limited there time on how they spend it on computers, cell phones, games, etc. this would not be an issue really.

  3. I do not think 50 hours is too much time on your cell phones. By the end of the week i know i spen way more time on my phone. i text 24/7. I always get texts from the time I wake up untill i go to bed. And even then i sometimes wake up at something in the morning to a text and then ill stay up for a little to talk.
I also dont think kids are hurting themselves by being on the phone alot... Some people just have nothing else to do because they have strict parents that dont let them do anything other than stay at home all the time.

  4. I think that it helps and hurts at the same time. It helps because it is good that we can stay connected wwith our friends and family. we can also go ont the internet and express our feelings, and create what we want to do. But on the other hand it also hurts because we should try to get other things done. like homework, spending time with friends and do activities that we love.

  5. I think 50 hours a week for a eight year old is a little much. Although for teenagers I think its critical that they can spend as much time as they need on it.Even though it affects some peoples social skills i think it developes many of other skills. Like writing And reading. Also the world is coming to a place with more technology and electronic devices.

  6. This is in response to Tessa's comment. Some parents are really strict and don't let their kids do anything. My friends parents are like that a lot.

  7. I think that 50 hours a week is not too much. Most normal Americans work about 40 hours a week and that is about 8 hours a day. Also we spend about half of every school day being on the computer or being taught by projectors. It is hurting us a little but it is not all our fault as kids. In English we have to type essay, in civics we do blog post and most class they have notes we have to copy down. So are kids/students all to blame for it?

  8. i say yes and no because cell phones helps people keep in contact with whoever they need to keep in contact with and the same goes to internet. the internet is another way we can stay connected with people.

  9. Yes I do believe this is too much time on thechnology equipment. I know I was made fun of for playing about 20 hours a week from like 5:30 to like 8:30. Then when everyone started to play xbox 360 everybody still made fun of me even though they were playing about 40 hours a week. So yes I saw first hand how much time technology took up of my life, so i decided to stop playing at all or occanially.

  10. I am commeenting on behalf of Logan Black's post, I disagree because wasteing your life on usless technology is rediculious. Technology like cell phones and xboxs destroy lives and causes addiction that acutally need to be treated medically.

  11. I think that it is not that much at all. No most of us are texting, but some are not. Some kids are on the computer doing other things like theri homework. Also we are using them to see what time we have to be some where.

  12. I would have to no because we use this stuff to keep in touch with our friends, family, coaches, business partners, ECT... If we were to not have cell phones how would we know if a loved one far away went to the hospital? I know you’d say use the house phone or work phone but what if you are not there. It is so much easier for us to call or text the person because there cell is right there with them. The only reason everyone is making such big deal is because some kids or teenagers don’t get a limited time from their parents. Talking to people is like an addiction and if your parents can’t lay down rules then there is who to blame not us.

  13. I think that kids are using too much technology, and it's not good for them. I think that 50 hours a week of technology is ridiculous because there are much better things to do with your time than stare at a blinking screan all day and that's more hours than most full-time adults work in a week. It's ok to watch TV or text, but parents should limit how much technology their children are using.
