3/12/10 - Current Events Quiz / News Discussion

What's your News IQ?

To test your knowledge of prominent people and major events in the news,  take this short 12 question quiz. Then see how you did in comparison with 1,003 randomly sampled adults asked the same questions in a recent national survey conducted by the Pew Research Center.

Included in the current version of the quiz are several questions relating to the state of the economy as well as other prominent happenings and people in the news. For an analysis of the findings from the poll on the public's News IQ, read the full summary of findings. (No peeking! If you are going to take the quiz, do it first before reading the analysis.)

You'll also be able to compare your News IQ with the average scores of men and women; with college graduates as well as those who didn't attend college; with people who are your age as well as with younger and older Americans.

Are you more news-savvy than the average American?

In the comment section discuss one or more of the following issues:

1. What role should the news play in the lives of average Americans?
2. Why should we pay attention to what's going on in our community, state, nation and world?
3. What can we do to improve awareness of current events, especially among young people?
4. What can I do as a teacher to help students understand the news and be more interested in our world?

  2. 3. we can make the news alittle more entertaining and less boring and talk a little more about events that younger people care more about and mix in some more complicated events.

  3. I think that the best way to capture interest in current events among young people is too make video games based on the news so that they can learn while having fun.

It should be on more so more people could learn more. So if something would happen then this way most of the americans would know more. The one way is to have it in class. Use the smart board so we can learn more.

  5. as a teacher you could hand out candy if students get the answer right. like say you are teaching about 9/11 and if the student gets the answer right hand out candy (besides Lollipops). that would incourage students to study for tests and quizes because they want the candy. Well it doesn't have to be cany, it could be anything teens like having. Your students would have something to work for, and by getting answers right they feel they have achieved a goal.

  6. We should pay attention to what's going on in the world so we know whats going on. As of the war, money issues, weather alerts, and all that stuff the news provides of with. If no one watched the news they would be clueless. i watch the news all the time because i love finding out whats happeing.

  8. I believe to improve awareness of current events within young society. Schools should have a 10 minute news skit every day in 1st period to help aware children of current events. They should make it run from 8 o'clock to 8:10 evey day before the start of school. I belive this will greatly increase awareness.

  9. You should play attention to the news, you should pay attention to the news. In you community, you should know what is going. This way you can get involved in what is going on. Also in your state that way you know what changing. In the world, in case you there is a new law so you don’t get caught doing the wrong thing.
You can help yourself by paying more attention. This way you will know the weather, and upcoming events. Also you can see what is going on in the world and also in sports.

  10. I think thta the news should try to update us on current politics but try to do it in a way that will keep people interested. I dont mean they have to gossip about them but they should try to be a little more infomative on current politics.

  12. Ways to get young people aware of current events is to watch video clips of current events in school and asign them as homework and possibly making a school tv channel and talk about current events and things that are happening at our school

  14. I think news is an important thing but a lot of things on the news now a days are not relavant or else they talk about things that will effect no one. I mean if your going to do a news story and expexct people to learn from it make it memorable. I think everyone should know atleast what will affect them.
