3/12/10 - National News / 2nd Amendment

The Open Carry Movement

Lately, the debate over gun control and the rights given by the Second Amendment have focused on the specific issue of unconcealed weapons. "Open Carry" as it is known, is legal in 38 states - including Pennsylvania

The article “Locked, Loaded, and Ready to Caffeinate” explores the recent phenomenon of “meet-ups” in which open carry advocates gather in public, often at popular shops and cafes:
Gun owners in California and other states that allow guns to be openly carried have tested the law by showing up at so-called meet-ups, in which gun owners appear at Starbucks, pizza parlors and other businesses openly bearing their weapons.
“Our point is to do the same thing that concealed carriers do,” said Mike Stollenwerk, a co-founder of OpenCarry.org, which serves as a national forum. “We’re just taking off our jackets.”
The goal, at least in part, is to make the case for liberalized concealed weapon laws by demonstrating how uncomfortable many people are with publicly displayed guns. The tactic has startled many business owners like Peet’s Coffee and Tea and California Pizza Kitchen, which forbid guns at their establishments. So far, Starbucks has resisted doing the same.
Students: What do you think about open-carry laws and the related movement? How do you feel about citizens carrying their weapons in public? Do you own a gun? If so, would you carry it openly? Why or why not?

  2. i think that people should be allowed to carry guns in public.Even though i dont own a gun myself i still think that someone that carrys a gun around is almost helping prevent crime in a way. someone notices that you have a gun then they might not want to do anything to you.

  3. i honestly could care less about open-carry laws and related movement. If people want to carry their guns around, so be it. It doesn't have any affect on my life. As long as they are not shooting people, then don't worry about what their doing. I think that people shouldn't carry them in cities, just because their are tons of little kids and the gun might freak them out. There's kids everywhere, but there's more in cities then in the country or towns. No i do no own a gun and i never plan on it. I don't have a reason to have one. I do no hunt or any of that stuff. And no if i did own one i wouldn't carry it around in public because it makes you look like a bad person. Well to me it does.

  5. the right to openly carry a gun is part of the second amendment and should be allowed . I own a gun but I would not carry it around because it is a hunting rifle and not a handgun

  6. I think that it should be illegal to carry a gun with you without permit. If i seen anyone carrying a gun i would be offended and frightened because what if they are mental they could just freak out and start shooting people and if there wasn’t the law that allows you to carry a gun around then that couldn’t happen. No i do not own a gun.

  7. I don't really think much of it. I never see citizens carring weapons in public. I don't own a gun personally and no I wouldn't carry it around. I don't need too so why would I.

  8. they prove a good point and i can see why they want to be abl to show their guns because like the man said its safer when the wolves can tell the lions from the lambs and before i seen this i was wondering why it matters if your guns out oor tucked in your shirt but its true your not going to get mugged or beat up if people see your armed and i believe hthis law insted of only being in 36 states to be in all of them to ensure the safty of all so yes i very much agree with these gun lovers

  9. I think that open-carry laws are a good thing because if someone's going to carry a gun anyway, at least other people can see it so if the person decides to shoot someone else, everyone will see it coming and won't be as shocked.

  10. I think it is a good idea because there is so much crime that goes on now a days that it would be better if everyone could carry there own little hand gun around. I own two guns, a 2 22, and a 30 30. I would not carry them around because they are my hunting guns and are big but if i had a little hand gun then yes i would carry it around, again because of how high the crime levels are.

  11. I belive that open carry laws are a good thing. They can show attackers that you own a firearm and its at your side incase of an emergency. It's just citizens exerciseing thier right to bare arms and i believe it shows we do not wates are rights. Yes i do won a gun, but i wouldnt open carry it because i dont really need to.

  12. I can see that the gun laws are taken seriously by people who think that they should carry guns for protection, but their are people who are against it becouse thay dont wont to get shot.I can relate to not wonting to getting shot but i like to feel safe to. I guess i am agreeing that gun laws should be expresed more, becouse better to have a gun than to not to. I bet their would be alot more shootings but their proably be alot less bad guys.

  14. I think that people should not carry a gun everywhere because that could just lead to more trouble because crazy people would carry a gun. And yes I own a gun, we live in pennsylvania for god sakes! but i still dont think that people should carry them around

  15. I do own a gun, and yes I'd carry it openly because then people would know no to try messing with me or even attack violently. carrying a gun really isnt a big deal although it could encourage people to shoot people but other than that i think its an overall good law.

  16. I think it's okay to a point, but I don't mind it. I feel okay most of the time, because everyones different and you don't know who's going to shoot someone for no reasons. Yes I do own a gun, no most likely not I don't need it.
